Kunya-Urgench is one of the largest single meteorites to have fallen in the past several decades. Along with Jilin, Sikhote-Alin, Sterlitamak and Carancas, it is one of the few meteorites to have made witnessed impact features in the earth.

The main mass partially disintegrated upon impacting the earth, resulting in a ~900kg main mass and a number of smaller fragments both in and around the impact-pit, pictured below.

These fragments were recovered from the immediate vicinity of the crater within a few weeks of the fall, but the humidity of the region is such that even that little exposure resulted in a moderate degree of weathering.
